Abram is AWESOME!!

The Way Back Machine & Fractured Fairy Tales

Driving up the access road to Abram, it happened. The flood of endorphins. Arm hairs standing up a bit. An emotional reaction to a pile of rock topped by flora and frozen water under a blue bird sky. I knew there was still untracked powder on yonder trails a day after the powder day. Abram is a special place and I knew I was in for a good day.

After grabbing a seat on The Way Back Machine (man, I love that lift’s name and the area’s theme), I surveyed the snow conditions and I liked what I saw. I REALLY liked what I saw. Loose powder was everywhere and the edges of the trails had plenty of untracked. A day after the powder day.

Pat's Pass

I dropped into Fractured Fairy Tales under the Way Back Machine and found a ton of untracked powder along the trail edge along with infinite loose powder everywhere else I turned. The pitch of Abram’s diamonds are all excellent, not the steepest around but perfectly pitched for powder turns. The terrain is undulating and requires attention. The skiing was fantastic and more than could be hoped for on a day after.

Nell’s Way and Pat’s Pass were an excellent combo of blue squares with full on untracked lines. Unreal. Zephyr Glades also had untracked edges with excellent pitch and terrain features. I love this mountain! Where else can you ski a T-bar line without ducking a rope? And guess what I found under the Maine T? More untracked on the edges and loose powder in between the untracked. After lunch. On the day after.

The off map trees were skiable but certainly in need of more snow and a hardened base layer. I only skied two such offerings and that was sufficient to satisfy my curiosity. Two very fun runs but both required a bit too much effort when untracked could still be found on open trails. And with ease, as I skied down Maybelle’s Trail and Natasha’s Niche during my final runs of the day and both still had ample untracked snow.

Abram is Awesome. It is one thousand vertical feet of excellent skiing, quality trees, undulating terrain, and aesthetically pleasing trails. One double services the whole mountain, over a dozen unique routes down, which keeps the trails empty and conditions high quality throughout the day. Lines are normally short but today lines topped out around 10 minutes and that is probably as bad as it ever gets. A few minutes tops is more the norm. The price is right and the quality is exceptional. If you enjoy the skiing you read about here on TSW, then you owe it to yourself big time to get to Mount Abram.

    1. I would hardly call Abram low angle. 🙂

Off the beaten path is the way to go when you expect a big weekend with lots of crowda at the more well known spots.

  1. Hey Steve,

I’m glad you had a chance to sample Maine’s Authentic Skiing and Riding Experience. Please let me know if you would like to return, I’d love to meet you in person.

    Cheers, Jamie

  2. There’s another one for me! You hit it 2 days after the dump, but they didn’t get that much out of it, did they? Looks like they leave quite a bit ungroomed.

    1. They got about 16″. They do leave a large amount of the mountain ungroomed… maybe as much as 50% if you count the trees. I really like Abram, need to get back here more often.

  3. You are making Mt. Abram sound as good as it is! Nice of them to work with New England Telemark to develop more glades, now if only Mother Nature will keep cooperating! ….BrownfieldRick
