Lots of uncertainty about a storm and how much would fall in Vermont. Storm projections decidedly favored southern New England with storm totals rapidly diminishing to the north. With a rare drive to southern Vermont tipping the day trip meter at two and a half hours on dry pavement, I only wanted to make the drive if it was going to be worth the effort.
And it definitely was! Words can not describe but I will do my best. After a harrowing drive that lasted more than three hours and involved knuckles from a virtually unplowed I-91, I got to Magic at 8:45am and hooked up with Kingsley. Magic opens at 8am on the weekends which I totally dig but did not work in my favor today!
Magic is reported six inches but I call MAJOR bull shit. We were skiing boot deep untracked all day. Six inches is just barely over my buckles. Someone go tell Magic’s management that their snow reporter isn’t playing with a full length ruler. Boot deep untracked was the rule from open until noon time. Untracked everywhere with no life line, no competition, and no traffic. Sah-weet! Everything but Master Magician and Green Line were hammerable. Knee deep and deeper drifts were found everywhere including the length of some trail sides. Unreal. This is the best “six inches” of snow that I have ever skied.
Base damage was minimal with no core shots. Probably would hardly have been any base damage except for Green Line and an ill advised tree shot. I dropped Red Line on my next to last run which may have also scratched up the bases. Lined up for the Ladies Tee on the big cliff but threw caution to the wind and went for the big huck to successful results. Forgot how fun Red Line is with the audience so close to the action. Lots of drops have not been filled in yet so I was taking air left and right. Mucho fun.
Hard to decide on a best run of the day. First tracks down Black Line to Lucifer was insanely good but it went by like a blur as I was charging hard. Completely forgot about the big drop off halfway down Lucifer. Major air and stuck, nice. Black Line to Heart was one of my better combos which was great including an untracked line down Black Line at 3pm to close my day. Gonif with some untracked shots at 10:30ish was sensational as well. And first tracks on Slide along with Kingsley was sweet followed by much knee deep goodness on Wizard.
The nuts to say the least. Amazing how much work and improvement has been made in the past couple years since my last visit to Magic. Sweet. Still an amazing amount of tracked up powder still ready for the taking. Should ski great straight through the week and beyond with more snow coming.
