An Excerpt from Birches by Robert Frost

When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the line of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy’s been swinging them.
But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay.
Ice-storms do that. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored
As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.

Soon the sun’s warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust—
Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away
You’d think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.
They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load,
And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.

The Season Cometh & Web Site Updates

While this weekend’s cold shot and probable mountain top dusting will only likely be a tease and hint of things to come, it is hard not to be reminded of last October’s epic ending and look forward to this October’s end in hopes of an early season pounding. First tracks have already been made out West and the bull wheel is already turning at A-Basin. It will not be long before we get ours in Northern New England.

In the meantime, I have continued sprucing up the redesigned web site. The latest updates and additions include a horizontal navigation bar now in place via Menubar plugin (which still needs styling), an upgrade to WPG2 (please report any broken image links, thanks!), an upgrade to WordPress v2.3, a new form on the Contact page via the cforms II plugin, a daily image in addition to the random image, and an edited sidebar that eliminates redundant or needless links. Please continue to pardon the dust as the finishing touches are being made before the snow flies. Because once the mountains are white, I will be damned if I am going to spend skiing time working on design and code!

Green Mountain Club: Support Restoration of Big Jay

The Green Mountain Club is encouraging and requesting donations specifically to support the organization’s stewardship program. A press release linked to the Big Jay cut cites the need to raise $50,000 in the coming months for land preservation and stewardship. Green Mountain Club Stewardship Coordinator Rebecca Washburn estimates that almost 1,000 trees were cut on a swath that measures 900 vertical feet up to 60 feet wide.

Update on Legal Process of Alleged Cutters of Big Jay

WCAX is reporting Alan Ritter appeared at a status conference today regarding the legal proceedings. Paul Poulin was not at the conference in Newport, VT. The article suggests that both alleged cutters confessed to game wardens about the destruction of state property after initially denying the charges. Both men have plead not guilty to the charges. The damage is estimated at $48,000 not including labor. The men face up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines if convicted.

Fall Tent Sales: Lincoln, NH

Ah, the wonders of the Fall. Cooling temperatures, refreshing crisp breezes, new ski movie releases, and huge gear tent sales. Skiing equipment does not get any cheaper than the pre-season Fall Tent Sales. Excellent deals were spotted in the Lincoln, NH area this afternoon including Rogers’ and Sport Thoma’s annual tent sales in Lincoln and North Lincoln. Rogers’ tent sale is located across the street from their well designed new building. No longer a claustrophobic old building, Rogers is now a three floor spacious warehouse full of the latest in winter sports gear.

Prices for last season’s skis were particularly low under the tent next to the new building but cheap skis from last season were also located upstairs. Examples include used Dynastar Legend 8000s for $400 mounted with demo bindings, Legend 8800 unmounted for $400, and last season’s Legend 8000s for $400. All fantastic prices for one of my favorite ski lines. If I did not already have 2.5 pairs of the 8000, I would have taken a pair of their hands!

Get out there and buy some cheap gear from last season while you can!
