Bromley: The Corn Mountain

Blue Ribbon Quad

Sledhauler on Havoc

En route to Bromley, I experienced disconcerting feelings driving past Magic Mountain. The feelings were irrelevant since Magic wouldn’t have the sunny exposure needed for great corn snow and was closed regardless. But it still felt odd to drive past southern Vermont’s finest to frolic instead at the Sun Mountain. Bromley was the safe bet on guaranteed perfect corn conditions and it delivered with aplomb… and I have no disconcerting feelings about that.

I had not skied Bromley in more than eleven years. Perspective is an interesting thing. Back then I considered Bromley’s Blue Ribbon Quad area as “full of tough diamond runs” that are “nothing to laugh about”. The trails that schooled me then seem mellow now. I have had such an amazing journey in less than a dozen years. And to think that journey is only getting started…

Sledhauler at the Summit of Bromley

Sledhauler with Magic in the Distance

Sledhauler and I repeatedly lapped all of the trails in the Blue Ribbon Quad area throughout the day. Corkscrew, Peril, Avalanche, and Havoc all provided incredible corn snow at various times. Some trails baked slightly past prime which is a testament to Bromley’s southern exposure considering temperatures were cool and comfortable. But for the most part, it was all good everywhere. TheSnowWay.com Air Force showed up on the rollers of Havoc, Lower Stargazer, and Lower Twister.

Holding true to my pre-season reflections on discovery and rediscovery, Bromley is the fifteenth different area that I have skied this season…

Perhaps instead of specific goals detailing places I want to ski and things I want to do, I should rather set a general goal of discovery, rediscovery, and adventure. That this season might be remembered not for the epic conditions but rather for the epic adventures and new explorations. And for the people I shared those adventures with…

Indeed.

  1. Steve: Thanks for such a great day on the snow. It’s remarkable to read your comments and think of how different our attitudes were going into the day and yet it still proved to be a great day on the snow. It a season destroyed by overcommitment, school and physical limitations, I can’t tell how great it felt to surf some long arcs in the corn and watch you pop off the rollers with a bluebird sky for a back drop.

Remember: “No one gets out alive!” Live life every chance you get.

  2. Thanks, Sled! It was an awesome day beyond expectation. Glad you could get some fun time in this week! Once you’re done with school and have a new hip, we’ll need to do that more often!
